Reiki- How Frequency Can Heal

Reiki is one of the energy healing modalities available today. Many find great benefits in it, and some feel it does nothing. Though no definitive high-quality clinical research has proven its effectiveness, plenty believe it to help soothe, relax, and heal patients from several maladies, including heart disease, cancer, fatigue, anxiety, and depression(Newman, 2017). Here, we are going to discuss the mechanics of Reiki on an energetic level. We will go into Reiki theory, the electromagnetic fields of the human body, and how energy helps heal the body even from a distance.

Reiki Theory

Current research identifies the universe’s smallest particles: quarks, leptons, protons, electrons, and neutrons that comprise all matter. The universe consists of energy transformed in various forms, including within the human body. Energy can become stagnant due to injuries, adhesions, and emotions, obstructing blood flow, nutrients, and nerve impulses (Newman 2017). Reiki is regarded as universal life energy, which a practitioner channels to enhance energy flow. This “chi” exists in everyone (Powers 2016). When channeling chi, a practitioner attunes to a different frequency. Reiki healers place their hands on or above a person’s body to transfer energy and synchronize frequencies. Entrainment occurs when two oscillating bodies align, like two adjacent clocks (Powers 2016). This process explains how Reiki functions.

The Human Electromagnetic Field

The human body produces an electromagnetic field. Our blood (1Hz-20MHz), bones (15-30Hz), brain (.5Hz-80Hz), and heart (1.2Hz) all produce different frequencies. The first human energy field recorded was that of the heart, which led to the production of the electrocardiogram and, 20-some years later, the electroencephalogram (Oschman 2002). Many of our modern medical equipment provides feedback on these fields, including the SQUID magnetometer. These fields arise from the pulse of electric currents that run throughout the body’s tissues, primarily through the blood and nerves.

Reiki-Energy Healing Even At a Distance

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment that stimulates tissue repair(Sheena 2017). When injured, the body gives off bioelectric cues that signal the body to regenerate tissues; the response at low frequencies of electrical stimulation activates regeneration and tissue repair. This includes skin and heart tissue, which needs about 12-12.5 Hz, whereas nerve tissue is at 2 Hz, bone is at 7 Hz, and ligaments are at 10 Hz (Sheena 2017; Oschman 2002). When a Reiki practitioner is channeling energy, placing their hands on or over the client, the output is 7-10 Hz (Powers 2016). At the HeartMath Institute, studies show how heart-brain coherence and energy affect healing and emotional states (2025). According to their studies, the nervous system acts as an antenna that regularly interacts with these fields, including the heart fields of others. Coherence can be reached between two subjects, whether touching or up to a 5ft distance between them. Further studies need to test if this distance can go any further.

In Closing…

Reiki is a controversial healing modality that does have a basis in science. Frequency entrainment and coherence have been shown to stimulate regeneration and healing within the body and the psyche. While no definitive clinical research shows Reiki’s effectiveness yet, great strides are being made in the medical field to show that energy medicine can potentially be beneficial.
